Telegram: A Hidden Threat?
Hi Everyone - In today discussion, we will share the information why I believe Telegram is potentially more dangerous than the dark web. This may come as a surprise to many features but there are several reasons why I suggest avoiding Telegram for chatting and other purposes.
Lack of Default End-to-End Encryption
Unlike popular belief - Telegram does not provide end-to-end encryption by default. This means that while WhatsApp ensures that only the sender and receiver can read the messages no one can see your message in middle. Telegram does not offer the same level of privacy by default. The data shared via Telegram can be accessed by the company, authorities or potentially the Russian government, as we know Telegram is a Russian-origin application. Furthermore, Telegram collects and stores all your contacts on its servers. which it informs users about only when asked. This is a significant privacy concern that many users are unaware of Privacy.
Risks of Unchecked File Sharing
One of Telegram is notable features is the ability to send any type of file including executables APKs, Software or potentially harmful files like viruses. While this offers freedom in sharing. it also poses significant risks. Telegram does not have a mechanism or algorithms to check the safety of files being sent by sender. That means users could accidentally download malicious files. This lack of oversight is concerning as it could lead to the spread of viruses or other harmful content.
Prevalence of Scams and Illegal Content
Telegram has been associated with various scams including betting scams and other distribution of illegal pornography. Although the Indian government has taken steps to Banning the spread of copyrighted material, Pornography and illegal content on the platform. Telegram remains a hub for such activities. The platform open to all features and lack of monitoring make it an attractive venue for scam operators and distributors of illegal content. This is another reason why I advise against using Telegram especially for these activities like file sharing.
Questionable Question on Security Protocols
Telegram uses a unique encryption protocol called MTProto, which is not widely tested or used outside of the app. While Telegram claims to be an open-source platform. which theoretically means it should be more secure due to community contributions and quick fixes for vulnerabilities the reality is that MTProto limited use raises concerns about its reliability and security. Moreover, the company can scrape public data from channels and groups. which adds another layer of concern regarding user privacy.
International Concerns and Censorship
Telegram has faced censorship in several countries due to its association with illegal activities and potential misuse. Some countries have even banned the platform indicating the level of risk it poses. Additionally, Telegram API and encryption protocols have loopholes that could allow the company or others to collect and misuse of user data on a large scale.
Conclusions
Telegram seemingly harmless facade hides several dangers that users should be aware of. Its lack of default end-to-end encryption, unchecked file-sharing capabilities, prevalence of scams, questionable security protocols, and international concerns make it a risky platform to use. For these reasons, I advise caution when using Telegram, particularly for sensitive communications or file sharing. Stay informed and prioritize your online security.
